Google Drive Ends Automatic Desktop Photo Backups

As of August 10, 2026, Google Drive for desktop no longer supports automatic background syncing of photos and videos to Google Photos.

Users must now manually configure backups through the Google Photos website or import files directly to ensure new images from desktop folders are stored in the cloud.

Existing photos already backed up under the previous system remain unaffected, but new files added to previously synced folders will not upload automatically without a change in user settings.
