BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected President of Bangladesh on August 20, 2026, securing 255 votes against 88 votes for opposition nominee Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed.
The 78-year-old leader won the first contested presidential election in the country since 1991, with 343 out of 349 registered lawmakers casting their ballots in the poll.
Alamgir is scheduled to take the oath of office on August 21, 2026, at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban, succeeding Mohammed Shahabuddin who resigned last month due to health reasons.
