A study published in NeuroImage found that watching short-form videos temporarily reduces activity in brain regions responsible for cognitive control, focus, and decision-making in 56 young adult participants.
Researchers used fMRI scans to observe decreased activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex while subjects engaged with clips shorter than 30 seconds.
While the study does not indicate permanent brain damage, it builds on 2025 and 2026 research suggesting that rapid context switching in short videos impairs prospective memory and task accuracy.
