Former paediatrician Annie Andrews won the South Carolina Senate race in Tuesday's midterm elections, securing the first Democratic Senate victory in the state for 28 years.
Andrews defeated Republican candidate Darline Graham, who had been appointed to the seat in July following the sudden death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham.
Graham faced heavy scrutiny during her campaign after acknowledging a lack of experience in national security and foreign policy during primary debates.
