Bosnian Serb War Criminal Ratko Mladić Dies at 84

Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb military chief convicted of genocide and war crimes, died in a hospital in The Hague on August 27, 2026, while serving a life sentence.

Mladić was found guilty in 2017 for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were executed, with his life sentence upheld on appeal in 2021.

Judge Graciela Gatti Santana has ordered a full inquiry into the circumstances of his death, following multiple failed appeals by his family and legal team for release due to failing health.
