India voted in favor of a UN General Assembly resolution adopted on September 4, 2026, which aims to correct world map distortions that minimize the perceived size of Africa, Latin America, and South Asia.
The resolution, sponsored by Togo, passed with 164 votes in favor and one vote against from the United States, noting that the 16th-century Mercator projection perpetuates an unbalanced global view.
India’s representative clarified that the country supports the broader use of Equal Area map projections but does not specifically endorse the Equal Earth projection or any single alternative.
