Centre Refers FCRA Amendment Bill to Joint Parliamentary Committee

The Union Government moved the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, to a Joint Parliamentary Committee on August 12 following sustained pressure from Opposition parties and minority groups.

Home Minister Amit Shah held at least four meetings with Christian delegations since July 6, including an 18-member group on August 6, to address concerns regarding potential government takeover of NGO assets.

The Bill, introduced on March 25, proposes a 'designated authority' with civil court powers to manage or sell assets of NGOs whose FCRA registrations are suspended or cancelled.
