Hurricane Polo rapidly intensified into a Category 5 storm in the Pacific Ocean with sustained winds near 180 mph after being surveyed by a Hurricane Hunter aircraft.
The storm is not expected to make direct landfall but is forecast to skirt Mexico's southwestern coast, bringing potential flooding and mudslides to Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacan.
NOAA attributed the storm's strengthening to exceptionally high sea-surface temperatures linked to a record-breaking El Niño climate phenomenon measuring 3.05°C above average.
