A study of 107,836 postmenopausal women published in Menopause on July 29, 2026, found that women reaching menopause before age 40 have a 12.3% higher risk of developing hypertension.
Data from the UK Biobank showed that 22.6% of women with premature menopause developed high blood pressure, compared to 16.6% of those who reached menopause after age 45.
Researchers recommend that clinicians treat early menopause as a distinct cardiovascular risk factor and suggest regular screening for hypertension to mitigate long-term health complications.
