The Nepalese government informed Parliament that it cannot confirm if it possesses the original 1816 Treaty of Sugauli, which defines the nation's western boundary with India.
A parliamentary enquiry searched the Department of Archaeology, Narayanhiti Palace Museum, and multiple ministries but failed to locate the original documents for the 1816 treaty and the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship.
The uncertainty complicates Nepal's territorial claims over Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani, areas which India maintains are part of Uttarakhand state based on contrasting interpretations of the Kali river's origin.
