Keisha Lance Bottoms becomes first Black woman Governor in U.S. history

Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won the Georgia gubernatorial race, defeating Republican Rick Jackson and becoming the first Black woman elected governor in any US state.

Her victory returns the governor's office to Democrats after more than two decades of Republican control, serving as a setback for President Donald Trump who endorsed Jackson.

Bottoms previously served as Atlanta mayor from 2018 to 2022 and joined the Biden White House as director of the Office of Public Engagement before running on a platform to expand Medicaid.
