Doctors Warn of Rising Liver Disease Linked to Alcohol Consumption

The National Family Health Survey 2023-24 reports that alcohol consumption among Indian men aged 15 and above has risen to 18.9%, up from 18.7% in the previous cycle.

Medical experts warn that heavy episodic drinking is driving a surge in liver cirrhosis and failure, with nearly one-third of serious liver disease patients citing alcohol as a contributing factor.

Doctors note that 10-20% of heavy drinkers eventually develop cirrhosis, an irreversible condition, while also highlighting increased risks of pancreatitis, brain degeneration, and various cancers.
