Study Finds Grammar Tests in England Fail to Improve Writing

Research spanning ten years indicates that the Key Stage 2 grammar, punctuation, and spelling (GPS) test in England does not effectively improve pupils' actual writing composition skills.

While the test successfully increased students' ability to identify grammatical features, analysis shows that pupils frequently struggle to apply these rules correctly in their own written work.

The Department for Education is currently reviewing the national curriculum, with plans to introduce new tasks that better assess how students use grammar and punctuation within creative writing.
