Ebola Outbreak in Eastern Congo Claims 1,707 Lives

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo has resulted in 1,707 deaths out of 3,802 recorded cases as of Tuesday, August 4, 2026, marking the fastest-growing surge of the disease on record.

Nearly 90% of the cases are concentrated in the remote Ituri province, though infections have been confirmed in five other provinces, including the major city of Kisangani, according to Africa CDC data.

Response efforts are currently hampered by a lack of approved vaccines for the Bundibugyo virus, community mistrust, and ongoing armed conflict, with over 100 healthcare workers infected since the outbreak began.
