The Niño 3.4 region recorded a sea surface temperature exceeding 30°C on October 5 for the first time in recorded history.
The U.S. NOAA Climate Prediction Center projects an 83% probability of a strong to very strong El Niño peaking in December with a seasonal anomaly of 3.8°C.
The ongoing event follows only three previous very strong El Niño events recorded in 2015-16, 1997-98, and 1982-83.
