The Union Cabinet approved the ₹4,371 crore Viksit Bharat Initiative for Statistical Transformation, Analytics & Research (VISTAR) scheme for 2026-27 to 2030-31 to overhaul India's statistical architecture.

The scheme is divided into three components: comprehensive statistical operations with 59 planned surveys, support for statistical strengthening, and an Economic Census.

MoSPI will conduct the 8th Economic Census with States and Union Territories to obtain granular data on non-farm establishments and workers down to gram panchayat levels.
