Situated in the Andaman Sea approximately 138 kilometres northeast of Port Blair, Barren Island is renowned as South Asia's only active volcano and last erupted in 2017.
Spanning about 3 square kilometres, the island features rugged volcanic cones, ash, and a smoking crater surrounded by crystal-clear waters and coral reefs.
Due to its active volcanic status, access to the island is strictly restricted and permitted only via authorized boat tours offering views from a safe distance.
