New York City imposes one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels imposed a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for pupils up to eighth grade for 2026-27.

The policy affects nearly 600,000 public school students, prohibiting companion chatbots and disabling non-compliant AI components across more than 38 approved programmes.

A panel of students, educators, parents, and experts will assess the moratorium and five high-school pilots, delivering policy recommendations in April 2027.
