UN Report Warns of Displacement Risk in Mumbai and Kolkata

A new United Nations report warns that over 14 million people in South Asian deltas, specifically Kolkata and Mumbai, face immediate displacement from permanent sea level inundation.

Global sea levels rose at an average rate of 4.7 mm per year between 2014 and 2023, reaching a record 5.9 mm increase in 2024 due to ocean warming.

Approximately 770 million people globally, representing 10% of the population, live in coastal areas less than five metres above the high-tide line and face acute climate risks.
