Kharge Urges PM Modi to Freeze Lok Sabha Seats at 543

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to PM Narendra Modi on August 27, 2026, demanding an all-party meeting to discuss the government's proposed delimitation exercise before any parliamentary session.

Kharge explicitly requested that the Lok Sabha's strength remain at 543 seats for the next 25 years and that one-third reservation for women be implemented starting from the 2029 elections.

The letter follows remarks by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who indicated that another sitting of Parliament could be convened despite the Monsoon Session adjourning sine die on August 13.
