Italy Reintroduces Border Controls Following Ceuta Migrant Crisis

Italy announced the temporary reintroduction of border controls with Spain on July 30, following a crisis where over 60,000 migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

At least 72 people died during the crossing, and between 3,000 and 5,000 migrants remain in the enclave according to Ceuta's president, Juan Jesus Vivas.

While Italy cannot suspend the Schengen Agreement, it has invoked emergency provisions to implement internal border controls, a move supported by 22 other EU member states.
