Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced on Monday that the government will drop the proposed Parandur airport project to protect farmland and local settlements.
The state will instead develop Terminal 5 at the existing Chennai Airport in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India, aiming to increase passenger capacity by 55 million annually.
The Chief Minister stated that alternative sites for a second airport are being identified and will be finalized after technical feasibility studies are completed.
