Paraguay's Vice President Pedro Alliana assumed the presidency on Friday after the Senate voted unanimously to impeach and remove Santiago Peña amid a banking crisis.
The political upheaval followed the seizure of Ueno Bank by regulators on Tuesday, leaving nearly three million customers unable to access their savings.
Alliana will serve the remainder of Peña's term until August 2028, while prosecutors have placed Peña under house arrest pending an investigation.
