Bangladesh has mandated that all shops, markets, and shopping malls close by 8 pm starting Thursday to mitigate a severe electricity shortage caused by a natural gas deficit.
The government is seeking additional diesel supplies from India via an existing cross-border pipeline to stabilize the national grid, which is currently facing a shortfall of several hundred megawatts.
Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met with Bangladesh's Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood three days ago to discuss strengthening cooperation in the energy sector.
