The National Payments Corporation of India introduced a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate on UPI payments exceeding ₹2,000, effective October 15, 2026.

Person-to-person transactions, small vendors, and merchant transactions under ₹2,000 remain entirely exempt from the newly introduced charges.

Essential sectors such as railways, telecom, insurance, and fuel will incur a flat MDR of ₹5 for transactions above ₹2,000.
