Super El Niño Projected to Cause 15,800 Additional Heat Deaths in India

A Climate Impact Lab report warns that India could see an estimated 15,800 additional heat-related deaths between September 2026 and February 2027 due to a Super El Niño.

Globally, the report projects 451,000 additional heat deaths during the first six months of the event, with 239,000 occurring in the September-February period.

The El Niño event has driven eastern equatorial Pacific sea temperatures 3°C above normal, coinciding with a 15% national rainfall deficit in India's southwest monsoon.
