Daniil Medvedev was disqualified during his China Open semifinal against Novak Djokovic after hitting a rebounding ball into the stands, striking a spectator.
Under ATP Rulebook Section 8.04.L.4.a, players are barred from hitting balls dangerously or with disregard of consequences, regardless of intent to injure.
Medvedev will forfeit his approximately $220,000 in prize money, lose 200 ranking points, and face a fine of up to $350.
