Stanford Researchers Use AI to Design Novel Bacteria-Infecting Viruses

Stanford University researchers successfully directed an AI model to create a collection of artificial viruses that exclusively infect bacteria and pose no threat to humans.

Published in the journal Science, the study aims to develop designer viruses to combat drug-resistant bacteria, which the WHO reports kill millions of people annually.

Experts noted that while the current experiment poses no immediate security risk, the potential for AI to be used in developing complex human pathogens remains a concern.
