Eight students from Pune studying at Winners Academy in Alandi drowned at Diveagar beach in Raigad district on Thursday.
The victims were part of a 48-member student and teacher excursion group when they entered the sea and were swept away by strong currents.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the incident heart-wrenching, while Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan ordered an inquiry into trip safety protocols.
