Glasgow Schools Hire Primary Teachers to Improve Secondary Literacy

Glasgow has deployed primary-qualified teachers to 14 of its 30 secondary schools to provide intensive catch-up literacy classes for first-year pupils.

The initiative addresses a decline in reading standards, with 68% of P1, P4, and P7 pupils in Glasgow achieving expected literacy levels in 2024/25.

Scotland's 2025 Pisa reading score dropped to 488 from 493 in 2022, though it remains above the OECD average of 463 points.
