Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan stated on Sunday that any process disenfranchising millions of Indian citizens is intrinsically arbitrary and strikes at the heart of the Constitution.
Delivering an address at NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad, Justice Bhuyan asserted that the right to vote is central to the Basic Structure doctrine and cannot be detached from citizenship.
His remarks follow the Supreme Court's May ruling upholding the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls amid ongoing opposition criticism over deleted names.
