The layer of small stones spread beneath railway tracks is known as track ballast, made from crushed, hard rocks forming a supporting bed.
According to Indian Railways' RDSO, ballast distributes enormous train wheel loads, prevents sleepers from shifting, and provides stability via interlocking edges.
The gaps between the ballast stones allow rainwater to drain away properly, protecting the track foundation from water-related damage.
