Congo Ebola Outbreak Death Toll Surpasses 3,000

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed 3,007 lives, with total confirmed cases reaching 6,186 as of Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Caused by the Bundibugyo species, this epidemic is now the largest and deadliest in the country's history, surpassing the 2018-2020 outbreak and spreading across six provinces.

The World Health Organisation estimates that 60% of deaths occur outside treatment centres, while authorities have begun vaccinating frontline workers with Merck's Ervebo vaccine for potential cross-protection.
