India voted in favor of a UN General Assembly resolution on September 4, 2026, aimed at correcting world map distortions that minimize the perceived size of Africa, Latin America, and South Asia.
The resolution, sponsored by Togo, passed with 164 votes in favor, while the United States cast the lone vote against the measure and six nations abstained.
India clarified that its support promotes the broader use of Equal Area map projections rather than endorsing any single specific projection like the Equal Earth model.
