Russian Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi defeated world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen on the Icon board to power Ganges Grandmasters to their maiden Tech Mahindra Global Chess League title.
After a 3-3 draw in the first match of the final, Carlsen held a decisive advantage playing White in the second match before grabbing a pawn, allowing Nepomniachtchi to unleash discovered check tactics with 29.Bxf2+.
Carlsen resigned before move 40, handing the victory to the Grandmasters, while Greek IM Stavroula Tsolakidou of the same team was adjudged Player of the Tournament.
