The Gujarat Assembly unanimously passed the Gujarat Rent Bill, 2026, replacing the 1947 Mumbai-era law to regulate rental premises and protect landlord and tenant rights across the state.
Under the new law, written agreements and joint notifications to the Rent Authority within two months are mandatory, with security deposits capped at three months' rent.
Tenants overstaying without renewal must pay double rent, while essential services cannot be stopped and disputes are routed through a three-tier system.
