Garment factory workers in Dhaka and Gazipur protested on Sunday demanding a minimum monthly wage of BDT 30,000, leading to violent clashes, the torching of a police vehicle, and nineteen arrests.
At least 80 factories were shut amid the unrest, and five platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh were deployed in Gazipur as demonstrators blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury urged workers to return and announced the formation of a new minimum wage board chaired by Senior District and Sessions Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman.
