Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi, where the national song 'Vande Mataram' was performed for the first time.
An Army band played the tune while guests sang the song, followed by two Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters showering flower petals over the venue to mark the historic occasion.
The performance commemorates 150 years of the song, which was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875 and later adopted as India's national song by the Constituent Assembly in 1950.
