Study Links COVID-19 to Reactivation of Dormant Viruses

A study of 1,154 hospitalized COVID-19 patients found that severe infection can reawaken 11 dormant viruses, including Epstein-Barr and Anelloviridae.

Researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital identified that strong inflammatory responses, rather than immune system failure, triggered the reactivation of these hidden infections.

The findings suggest a potential link between reawakened anelloviruses and long COVID, a condition estimated to affect over 10 million U.S. adults.
