The Indian rupee depreciated by 5 paise to close provisionally at 96.30 against the U.S. dollar on Monday.
The decline was attributed to elevated crude oil prices and ongoing foreign fund outflows keeping the currency range-bound.
Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee commenced its three-day meeting to decide on interest rates.
