The Supreme Court directed Indian Oil Corporation to pay ₹12 lakh in compensation to a Haryana woman denied a helper position at an LPG bottling plant in 1988 due to her gender.
The bench of justices Aravind Kumar and Vipul M Pancholi criticized the decision as an affront to womanhood, noting that the petitioner had litigated the matter for over three decades.
The petitioner, Sumitra, had previously won a 1990 trial court decree that was later overturned by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in October 2025.
