Pope Leo XIV announced that he will undergo lung surgery at Gemelli Hospital in Rome to remove a small, well-defined lung nodule discovered during medical check-ups.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed that the 71-year-old pontiff is expected to spend about one week in the hospital to recover.
The Vatican has not yet confirmed whether the procedure will impact his scheduled international visit to Latin America from November 6 to 17.
