Italy has formally requested that Spain be temporarily suspended from the Schengen Area due to the escalating migration crisis at the Ceuta border enclave.
The move follows a massive surge where over 60,000 migrants attempted to cross from Morocco into the Spanish territory, overwhelming local border security resources.
European Union officials are scheduled to meet on August 3 to discuss the request, which could lead to the reintroduction of temporary border controls across the bloc.
