OpenAI announced it will add an invisible watermark named textGrain to ChatGPT and Codex text outputs in the European Union to comply with transparency rules under the EU AI Act.
The watermarking feature will roll out over the coming weeks to eligible users on all plans while remaining off by default for global API developers.
The company acknowledged that text watermarking technology has limitations and cannot guarantee reliable detection or verify human authorship and accuracy.
