At least 12 people died and dozens remain missing after a vessel carrying over 50 fish traders and their goods capsized in Lake Kivu in eastern Congo on Saturday.
The accident occurred near Idjwi Island in South Kivu province, with about 15 individuals successfully rescued while the immediate cause of the capsizing remains unclear.
Deadly maritime accidents are frequent in Congo due to widespread vessel overloading and a general lack of life jackets among passengers relying on local waterways.
