Russia's Federal Security Service arrested a Japanese journalist on Sakhalin Island on suspicion of gathering defence capability information for Japanese intelligence.
The suspect was flown to Moscow, where the Lefortovo District Court ordered him held in custody for two months pending the investigation.
The arrest follows escalating tensions between Moscow and Tokyo after Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the disputed Kuril Islands in August.
