The Karnataka Cabinet has granted Tulu the status of an additional official language in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the decision following the government's first coastal Cabinet meeting held in Mangaluru.

The cabinet also discussed a proposal to rename the Dakshina Kannada district to Mangaluru, with public opinion to be gathered within a month.
