India Proposes Mandatory Battery Storage for Renewable Energy Projects

The Central Electricity Authority proposes that all solar and wind projects commissioned after July 1, 2027, must include co-located battery storage equal to 10% of their installed capacity.

New regulations will require a minimum two-hour storage duration for projects starting in 2027, increasing to a four-hour duration for installations commissioned between July 2029 and 2031.

The mandate aims to reduce renewable energy curtailment, which accounted for 300 gigawatt-hours of lost power in the first quarter of 2026 due to grid and transmission constraints.
