Brazil's government announced that deforestation rates in the Amazon and Cerrado regions reached record lows in the year leading up to July 2026.
Satellite data showed a 41.8% drop in Amazon deforestation, marking the largest decline since records began in 1988, alongside a 23.8% reduction in the Cerrado savanna.
The drop occurs ahead of a neck-and-neck presidential run-off election on October 25 between incumbent left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro.
