India Rejects Hague Court Ruling on Indus Waters Treaty

India has formally rejected a ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague, which declared the Indus Waters Treaty remains fully in force and binding.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated on August 31, 2026, that the arbitral body was illegally constituted and lacks jurisdiction to interfere with India's sovereign decisions regarding hydro-electric projects.

India continues to hold the treaty in abeyance following the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack, while the court has prohibited India from concreting the Ratle Hydro-Electric Plant dam wall until July 2027.
